Balagne, the playground of Domaine Terre d'Oliviers
Balagne is one of the most unspoilt regions of Corsica – with fragrant maquis, hilltop villages and a turquoise coastline.
From Domaine Terre d’Oliviers, located on the heights of Monticello, 5 minutes from L’Île-Rousse, everything is easy to explore: wild beaches on foot, markets, mountain passes and deserted coves within easy reach.
Between land and sea
Just 5 minutes from Domaine Terre d’Oliviers, L’Île-Rousse awaits you for a getaway between turquoise sea, lively lanes and the Corsican way of life. Founded by Pascal Paoli in the 18th century, this seaside resort combines authentic charm and a warm atmosphere.
The old town, with its cobbled lanes, shaded squares and colourful houses, invites you to stroll. Don’t miss the covered market, open every day, the living heart of the town where producers and craftspeople introduce you to the treasures of Balagne: farm cheeses, Corsican charcuterie, sun-ripened fruit, jams and maquis honey.
Less than 10 minutes’ walk from the estate, the famous Napoleon beach borders the town centre and will delight families: clear, shallow water and an unrivalled view of the pink granite islets.
At the end of the day, the marina and the surrounding lanes come alive. You will find many restaurants serving fresh fish, Corsican specialities and Mediterranean cuisine, sometimes with sea views. Wine bars, friendly terraces, artisan ice-cream parlours, as well as open-air concerts and musical evenings, punctuate the mild summer evenings.
Finally, for an unforgettable moment, climb up to the Pietra lighthouse at dusk: the low light sets the rocks ablaze and offers a magnificent view of the sea and the mountains.
The iconic ones
Balagne is full of paradise beaches with crystal-clear water and a tropical feel:
L’Île-Rousse beach (Napoleon): right in the town centre, perfect for a swim after the market or a stroll around the Pietra islets.
Ostriconi beach: on the edge of the Agriates desert, this wild beach is a little gem with pale sand and often powerful waves. Reached after a short walk, it has remained unspoilt.
Bodri beach: lined by the maquis, it offers turquoise water and a peaceful setting. Easy to reach, it is one of the most beautiful beaches around L’Île-Rousse.
Lozari beach: wide and family-friendly, perfect for swimming or sunsets.
Ghjunchitu beach: less well known but sublime, very photogenic, surrounded by rocks and vegetation.
The must-sees
A legendary name for a unique territory in the Mediterranean: a desert… of maquis. Accessible by 4×4, on foot along the coastal path or by boat from Saint-Florent, the Agriates desert hides two absolute jewels:
Saleccia beach (40km): white sand, turquoise water and pine forest. A Caribbean feel.
Lotu beach (40km) : wild, magnificent, accessible by boat.
Corsican authenticity
Balagne is nicknamed “the garden of Corsica”. Its hilltop villages bear witness to a proud, artisanal and panoramic Corsica:
Sant’Antonino: ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, a true eagle’s nest with views of the sea and the mountains.
Pigna : charming, lively, famous for its craftspeople and its Corsican music concerts.
Speloncato : narrow lanes, shaded squares and preserved authenticity.
Corbara, Aregno, Cateri, Feliceto…: charming stopovers, perfect for a stroll or a tasting of local products.
Monticello : the village overlooking L’Île-Rousse, this is where Domaine Terre d’Oliviers is nestled. Granite lanes, panoramic views of the sea and Balagne – the ideal starting point for exploring the region.
The imperial neighbour
Less than 30 minutes from Domaine Terre d’Oliviers, Calvi is an essential stop on your stay in Balagne. A true pearl of Corsica’s north-west coast, this luminous town blends Mediterranean charm, Genoese history and a relaxed way of life.
Its majestic citadel overlooks the bay and offers an exceptional panorama of the sea and the mountains. Stroll through its cobbled lanes steeped in history, between ramparts and old houses, and soak up the unique atmosphere of this emblematic place.
The marina, at the foot of the citadel, buzzes from morning until late at night: restaurants, artisan ice-cream parlours, café terraces and shops attract visitors and regulars in a chic and relaxed atmosphere.
Calvi beach, with its fine sand and shallow water, stretches for several kilometres. Lined with umbrella pines and easy to reach, it is ideal for a day out with the family
